Unesco/Prada - Sea Beyond Ocean Literacy Center
An an immersive, science-based multimedia journey transforming complex oceanographic information into an accessible, emotional experience

The SEA BEYOND Ocean Literacy Centre is the first space in Italy entirely dedicated to Ocean education. Developed for the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) with the support of Prada Group, the Centre opened in April 2025 on the island of San Servolo, Venice. It is part of the SEA BEYOND program, launched in 2019 to raise awareness among younger generations about ocean sustainability and its ever-changing nature.

Designed by CRA – Carlo Ratti Associati, the Centre features an immersive, science-based journey across three interconnected rooms. Dotdotdot was responsible for the video storytelling and scientific data interpretation that animate the multimedia installations, transforming complex oceanographic information into accessible, emotional experiences.

Dotdotdot conceived and produced two large immersive maps projected onto thin layers of water covering two sculptural tables: one shaped like the Spilhaus (a world map centered on the ocean) and the other like the Venice Lagoon. These dynamic data visualizations draw on research from UNESCO’s marine biologists, CMCC (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change), CNR (National Research Council), and Copernicus.

The first room explores the global ocean, showcasing real-time and historical data on currents, temperature, salinity, sea levels, maritime routes, and animal migrations. The second focuses on the Venice Lagoon, with high-resolution seasonal data revealing the lagoon's shifting ecology.

All visualizations are accompanied by a multichannel soundscape composed by Dotdotdot. Inspired by minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, the soundtrack layers melodic and rhythmic motifs to reflect the ocean’s dynamism and amplify the viewer’s sensory engagement.
