Visualizing 10 principles for extraterrestrial architecture

An immersive audiovisual installation presents at Triennale Milano ten themes designers must consider when envisioning a permanent and sustainable presence for humanity in space. Together with the renowned architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) we investigated how to showcase their ongoing research on space architecture, to inspire the next generation of design for an interplanetary future.

Each theme is represented with text, a video animation, and a soundscape created by Dotdotdot. Ten distinct audio tracks are conceived as instruments in a “sound orchestra.” As visitors move through the exhibition space, they will experience layered effects of sound and video.

PRINCIPLE 1
Gravity
The human body has evolved to deal with the constant force of gravity. To thrive in space, we must seek out gravity or reproduce it.
PRINCIPLE 3
Cycles
Material cycles are the foundation for life on Earth. Balancing these cycles is a crucial challenge for sustaining life in space.
PRINCIPLE 8
Resilience
To keep humans safe in space, we must design a habitat that can withstand any emergency.
PRINCIPLE 10
Color
Recreating the variety of color found on Earth can bring emotional and psychological benefits in space.
SOUND DESIGN PROJECT
Space Orchestra
We designed a Sound Palette to metaphorically “color” the video and engage the audience with their imagination by creating a syncretic audiovisual experience. Each audio corresponds to a musical instrument or genre to convey an abstract meaning related to the visual representation.
